Are Combo-Meds Right for You?
I’m sure you’ve seen commercials for products like DayQuil, Mucinex MAX, TheraFlu Multi-Symptom Severe Cold, and other combination meds used to help with the symptoms of colds and flu viruses.
These are great when you’ve got all of the miserable symptoms going on that are associated with the cold and flu viruses.
But what if you only have a minor headache? or maybe you’re having a spell of poor sleep and want to take something? Should you take NyQuil that has 3-4 different meds in it just to help you sleep?
I think this happens quite a lot, actually.
Perhaps all we have in the drawer is Advil PM or Theraflu Severe, and although we really just need an antihistamine, we take the combo-pill.
Most of the time, this probably isn’t a big deal. However, I want to encourage you to think a little more like a doctor in this area.
Our goal is always to use the least amount of medication necessary to effectively treat the issue.
So, whenever possible, only give yourself the medication that you actually need.
You don’t need to take “Advil PM” if you only need the “PM” part. Just take Benadryl (diphenhydramine) or (Unisom) doxylamine.
You don’t need to take Mucinex MAX if you only need the Mucinex (guaifenesin).
Just something to think about.
