Healthy Gut = Healthy Aging?

Here’s an interesting article.

Researchers have discovered something interesting about how the digestive health of mice affects how they age.

In effect, older mice tend to have a less robust microbiome in their GI tracts. This has been proposed as a possible reason for weaker immune function in later life.

Well, it turns out that mice like to “sample” each other’s feces. And, although this is pretty gross, it provides an effective way to transfer gut bacteria between different mice.

In their experiement, they put older mice with younger mice who had healthy gut flora and then later measured gut immune function in the older mice who had originally had the weaker gut immune function.

They found that through this “sampling” the older mice acquired the healthier biomes of the younger mice and this translated into healthier gut immune function.

Although this is only a somewhat odd experiment in mice, it does raise questions as to whether humans can improve immune function by cultivating healthier gut microbiota.

I think there is growing evidence that this is true.
