Non-Drug Approaches to Migraines

Migraine headaches are very common. Maybe you experience them. They can be quite debilitating.

There are a lot of medicines that people use to treat them. Anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxers, the ‘triptans’ like Imitrex, anti-psychotics, antidepressants, antihistamines, stimulants, steroids, etc.

Basically, from this list you can tell that we have barely any idea how to treat them, so we just throw everything at them.

This article cites quite a few studies that have looked at diet and supplementation as ways to prevent and treat migraines.

For example, testing for food sensitivities can be quite helpful for a number of people. I know that I have seen impressive results in some folks when we identify food triggers.

Sometimes, simply reducing carbohydrate load with a low glycemic index diet can make a difference.

Supplements such as magnesium, CoEnzyme Q10, B-vitamins and Omega 3 fatty acids have also been shown in some studies to help folks who suffer from migraines.

Obviously, we don’t fully understand the mechanisms and triggers for migraines that well. But, if it were me, I’d ‘experiment’ with the diet and supplements before I’d want to ‘experiment’ with anti-psychotics and steroids.

If you would like help with this, or access to ‘professional-grade’ supplements, remember that I’m here for you!
