Snow White
Here’s a silly thought: have you ever looked out on a snowy day and imagined what the scene would be like if snow was a different color?
Maybe thoughts like this are vestiges of my childhood imagination, but I like to indulge them sometimes.
Let’s try…
Green? – well, that wouldn’t be much different from springtime.
Blue, red, or purple? – interesting
What about brown? – yuck
But worst of all: black. You think your Seasonal Affective Disorder is bad now, what if snow was black? … ugh
See, I think exercises like this, although amusing, can open up new worlds of praise.
We are prone to grumbling about things (“Oh, I just hate snow!”) when we really should be praising God instead.
Wintertime is dark and cold to begin with. It must be so.
But if snow were black, I’d bet we wouldn’t even survive! We’d be so tired and depressed!
So, instead, God gives us a blanket of white to reflect even the dimmest moonlight.
It amplifies the meager sunlight that is able to fight through the thick, heavy clouds.
It sticks to tree branches and rooftops, looking like frosting.
It brightens the dark world better than any other color could.
It even creates joy for kids (and some adults) as they laugh and play and build in it.
Yeah, I don’t really like shoveling the driveway or driving in it either, but, hey, it really could be a lot worse.
I prefer to just say, “thank you, Lord, for making snow white. That was a really smart move.”
