Thanksgiving Reflection
I realize that Thanksgiving has come and gone already.
Maybe it’s just me, but in recent years, Thanksgiving has started to feel like merely a touchpoint as we round the bases to Christmas.
We get a day off of work, see family, eat yummy food, and then BOOM, we’re off to the races!
Some of us even hit the sales on Thursday night before we’ve digested our food!
Then Black Friday. Small-Business Saturday. Cyber Monday. Giving Tuesday.
It’s a mad rush until Christmas!
Which is really too bad.
Because, to me, you can’t properly enjoy Christmas without first adequately filling your heart with a good dose of thankfulness.
Yes, I know that the tradition of Thanksgiving is not linked to the birth of Jesus, but I think the sentiment definitely is.
And, just like the spoiled kid who (after being reminded) flippantly says, “Oh, yeah, thanks, grandma,” as he grabs for his next present, sometimes we can be tempted to have the same attitude.
“Oh, yeah, thanks, God…” as we dash off to the commercial chaos.
I’m definitely not trying to cast aspersions on getting good Christmas deals. I should probably be better about that sort of thing myself. (And I’m glad my wife pays more attention than I do).
But I do think that we, as a culture, could stand to linger a little longer in a state of thanksgiving.
Maybe someday we can truly model the ‘original’ Thanksgiving feast and have 3 days of gratitude and thankfulness toward God for all that He has done for us!
