The Sound-Engineer
A few weeks ago I was able to have a wonderful morning quiet time sitting at the edge of Lake Michigan.
The sun was still coming up. The breeze was blowing calmly over the lake, and the waves were gently crashing against the shore.
Ah.
I love that.
As I was praying and thanking the Lord for that moment, I began thinking about how brilliant God is.
Ok, ok… yeah, duh, God is pretty brilliant.
But
I was just sitting quietly and listening
to the wind
and the waves
taking in the sound.
In His wisdom, He designed the waves to have such a distinct, soothing, and serene sound that enraptures us.
(I know, this can all probably be deconstructed by ‘classical conditioning’ arguments that we could just as easily be soothed by a siren if that’s what we associated with calm and peace…. but, hmmm… I don’t know).
I mean, what if waves sounded like screams? or honks? or nothing at all?
But, instead, God assigns a unique sound to a single drop of water.
And He chooses so carefully to ensure that when that single drop is multiplied by millions and billions of drops, it becomes an entirely new sound – the sound of a wave on the shore.
Anyway, I think it’s amazing.
And I love it when I discover new ways to thank and praise the Lord.
God, the amazing sound-engineer.
