What is Functional Medicine?
What is Functional Medicine?
This term is becoming more recognizable, thanks to groups like Cleveland Clinic’s Institute for Functional Medicine, James Maskell’s Evolution of Medicine, and others who are getting the word out. But what is it?
At its core, Functional Medicine starts with a focus on wellness. It holds that if we treat our bodies the way they were designed to be treated, then they will function the way they were designed to function. It is really quite simple.
As we dig into specifics of nutrition, supplementation, detoxification, hormone balance, and the like, it can seem a bit more complex. But, in a very real and practical way, so many of the chronic illnesses that people take medicines for can be cured – if we fix the building blocks of health.
That’s exactly what functional medicine doctors aim to do: look at all of these individual factors, remove the toxins and obstacles to health, and then restore the nutrients, hormones, probiotics, and other things that help the cells to regain their health and vitality.
This really is the future of medicine. It has to be. It makes too much sense not to be. Patients and doctors who decide to step out into the cutting edge world of health-driven functional medicine can’t imagine ever going back to mere drugs and surgery.
